The Eliminate White filter is a simple Photoshop plug-in filter that generates transparency in a layer based on the ﾒwhitenessﾓ of each pixel color. This is useful when you want to ﾒpeelﾓ an image off the white background and put it on an independent layer. Itﾕs also useful for creating interesting effects. Please read the How-To section below for more information.
The filter was created using the Filter Factory, a scriptable plug-in found on the Adobe Photoshop 3.0x Deluxe CD-ROM. While the Eliminate White filter itself is freeware, the copyright of the Filter Factory portion is owned by Adobe Systems Incorporated. You can distribute this filter freely as long as the original archive file is unaltered.

Like other Photoshop plug-in filters, simply copy the Eliminate White filter into your Plug-ins folder and restart Photoshop.

The Eliminate White filter generates transparency based on the ﾒwhitenessﾓ of the color of each pixel. This is useful when you want to ﾒpeelﾓ an image off the white background to an independent layer. This works nicely with gradations, too. Hereﾕs the basic how to use this filter:

Prepare a target image as a non-background layer and select the layer in the Layers palette. (Note: the Eliminate White filter works with RGB images only.) You can convert a background layer to a non-background layer by double-clicking ﾒBackgroundﾓ in the Layers palette.

Apply the filter by choosing ﾒEliminate Whiteﾓ from the Filter > Transparency submenu. This creates transparancy based on the ﾒwhitenessﾓ of each pixel value. At this point, the image may look less saturated than before applying the filter.

This is an important step. Run Photoshopﾕs Select > Matting > Remove White Matte command to the same layer. Now, the original saturation of the image comes back, and all white areas becomes tranparent.

The ﾒEliminate White.afsﾓ file contains the original script of the Eliminate White filter. If you are interested in how the filter works, try loading the .afs file using the ﾒLoadﾓ button in the Filter Factory plug-in dialog box. The Filter Factory plug-in itself can be found in the ﾒOther Goodiesﾓ folder on Adobe Photoshop 3.0x Deluxe CD-ROM. The Filter Factory plug-in is an optional one and cannot be installed with the Adobe Photoshop installer. The Filter Factory plug-in is not available on the floppy disk set of Photoshop.
